Thyme is an herb which is mostly used to season meat and fish, but you probably didn’t know that the tea from the leaves of this plant is very effective. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used this herb as a medicine and modern science has proven that the ancients were right. According to research thyme tea can reduce the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s disease, and fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a condition which causes pain in the skeleton and muscles, mood swings, constant exhaustion and difficulty remembering things. The causes are physical trauma, genetics, and infections which make the brain to have an abnormally high pain response to signals which come from the nerves. Thyme can reduce the risk of fibromyalgia due to its antimicrobial properties. Thyme is rich in thymol, which is a chemical compound which fights off infections and bacteria. Hashimoto’s disease happens once the immune system overreacts and starts to attack the thyroid gland. A number of scientist consider that an overreaction of the immune system occurs when a bacteria or a virus triggers the immune system to create antibodies which are harmful for the thyroid. Thyme has antimicrobial properties which can be very beneficial in this case since they help the immune system to keep off harmful bacteria.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition which is inflammatory and which damages the blood vessels, heart, eyes, skin and joints. It occurs once the immune system gets baffled and attacks the tissues of the joints and other body parts by accident. Rheumatoid arthritis can be caused by environmental factors like smoking or being exposed to silica dust. Women who are over 40 are more prone to developing inflammation which can lead to this condition. Carvacrol, which is a natural compound found in thyme, prevents inflammation, as stated in a study form 2010.
Lupus is an inflammatory disease and it occurs when the organs and tissues become inflamed because of an overactive immune system. Some usual lupus symptoms are fevers, rash around the cheeks, fatigue, headaches, difficulty breathing and joint pain. Lupus is usually triggered by certain medications, exposure to sunlight and infections. Thyme can be helpful against lupus in two ways.
Firstly, it has got antibacterial properties which stop the infections which can worsen the lupus symptoms. Secondly, its compound carvacrol, which is an anti-inflammatory can reduce the inflammation which causes harm to the body.
Multiple sclerosis is a condition which affects the central nervous system and as a consequence the immune system attacks the coating around the nerve fibers by mistake. Since the damaged nerves are not able to pass signals effectively, some symptoms like weak muscles, inability to walk, tremors, vision loss, dizziness, slurred speech and fatigue appear. Multiple sclerosis is most probably caused by both environmental factors and genetics. Some environmental factors are temperate climates, smoking and infections. Thyme helps the absorption of omega-3 fatty acids and foods which are rich in these acids are beneficial for reducing the multiple sclerosis symptoms.
How to Prepare Thyme Tea
You can prepare thyme tea incredibly easy. All you need to do is add small handful of thyme leaves which are fresh or a tablespoon of dried thyme to a bowl. Pour some boiled water over the thyme and leave it for 5 minutes. Next, strain the tea and drink it instantly. Add some honey for better tastes if you want.
