You may feel sorry for your liver after a night of heavy drinking but you probably do not give this organ much thought after that.

The liver is the second largest organ after the skin. It helps turn food to energy and filters the harmful substances from the blood so you must ensure a healthy liver for good health.

Alcohol-related diseases, cancer, cysts, hepatitis and cirrhosis are just a few of the possible liver issues.

You can be susceptible to NAFLD (Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) even if you avoid alcohol. This is actually the most common reason for toxic liver disease in the US.

90,000 Americans live with NAFLD according to the America Liver Foundation. It can also lead to cirrhosis where the transplantation will be needed.

In order to prevent NAFLD, we should do the following (according to the American Liver Foundation):

  • Avoid alcohol
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Manage diabetes
  • Keep your weight at healthy levels
  • Incorporate exercise into the daily routine
  • Avoid food rich in salt, saturated fats and sugars
  • Consume a diet rich in proteins, grains, vegetables and fruits.

NAFLD has no signs or symptoms so it can progress to NASH (Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis). It is really important to visit your doctor if you experience the following symptoms of a toxic liver.

Scarring of the liver and cirrhosis can be caused if untreated NASH.

Your doctor can perform a test of your liver function if you suspect that your liver is toxic.

If you are obese person, the swelling can be actually disguised by fat in the stomach so the doctors can miss the toxic liver.

2.Skin Issues and Skin Sensitivity

Spider veins or itchy skin can be a result of swelling happening under your skin or edema. The skin can also appear flushed or red. Skin may look bronzed when liver failure is imminent in patients who are diabetics.

3.High Cholesterol And Blood Clotting

High cholesterol and hypertension can both be caused by obesity and they are actually both signs of underlying liver issue. You should check the cholesterol levels permanently and also check your blood enzymes if these are elevated.

Liver disease can be also related to blood clotting.

Lack of appetite, vomiting and nausea have been related with toxic liver disease. Patients who suffer from toxic liver (as a result of nausea) can also experience weight loss.

People with toxic liver have lack of appetite.

Lack of energy, weakness and fatigue have all been related with toxic liver disease. The first symptoms of liver failure are loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea and fatigue.

In this situation, it can lead to problems with your sleep, concentration and memory, due to the toxins buildup in your brain.

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes, nails or skin is a great sign for toxic liver disease. You should seek medical help instantly because it can progress to cirrhosis.
